How I met Dean Kamen

I was working at Amazon and a group of us were heading to lunch. As we popped out of the elevator into the basement hallway, there was man perched atop a Segway, just hanging out.

This was still prior to the Segway going into full production, so they were still a bit of a fascinating novelty. We approached, and I immediately recognized Dean Kamen. We chatted with him a bit (although I can’t remember what he said), and he whirred and twisted the Segway, demonstrating its agility.

At the far end of the hallway, just outside, a taxi cab rolled up. Kamen spun around, said good-bye, and then raced out the door to catch his cab.

The irony of watching him dismount, throw the segway in the trunk of the taxi, and then speed off did not escape me.

Kamen Does it Again...

Just found this via treehugger.com:

http://business2.blogs.com/business2blog/2006/02/dean_kamens_lat.html

The water purifier and stirling engine generator are absolutely brilliant. But I particularly like business model of creating village entrepreneurs developed by Iqbal Quadir.

Change comes quickly, but sometimes not quickly enough.

I have had this ongoing desire to find a way to employ evacuated solar tubes for water purification. Here’s a commercial site that sells a hot water system using evacuated solar tubes:

http://www.enviro-friendly.com/evacuated-tube-solar-hot-water.shtml

From what I have read, these tubes can passively collect solar energy and heat water to upwards of 150 degrees celsius. That’s more than enough heat to vaporize water.

The article on the Kamen/Quadir partnership says that “Kamen thinks it could be paired with the power machine and run off its waste heat.” I wonder what kind of efficiency improvement could be achieved by coupling Kamen’s water purifier with passive solar collection?

There is certainly more solar energy available than cow dung.

I know that Neil Gershenfeld at MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms has brought in novice inventors to work on and complete projects for his “How to Invent (Almost) Anything” classes. I think my evacuated-solar-tube-water-purifier would be a perfect, and manageable enough project for a ten week class.

Where do I sign up?
