I know Mulgrew is touring with it… there is a website for the show and you should check; it is well worth it. Her young Hepburn was pretty good, yet not an exact imitation. But when she came on for act two as the old Hepburn, it was truly astounding. Like goose-bump-astounding. She got a round of applause for just standing there, looking EXACTLY like Miss Hepburn—facial expression, tremors, mannerisms, voice and inflection, all absolutely perfect.
So yes, it was nice to meet the surviving Kate. At the time, Hepburn was still alive and I often wondered if she knew of the show, but reading Scott Berg’s book, it is fairly clear that she was, sadly, a little out-of-it for the last few years of her life. I was lucky enough to have a brief letter exchange with Miss Hepburn many years ago. I had been published in a poetry anthology and sent her a copy as a way to thank her for her life and work. I told her that it was something I created and wanted to share with her the way she shared her creations. I got a LOVELY letter back on her “Katharine Houghton Hepburn” stationary. And I have a nice little thank you note from her for some flowers I sent for her birthday after that.
