A question I have about Christopher
what’s the meaning of Chang-Yen,it really looks like a Chinese ordinary name(maybe like 常岩),is it your another surname? I’m just curious.;)

My great-grandparents moved to Guyana from Guangdong before my grandpa was born. My great-grandpa’s full name was Chang Yen, but when my grandpa was born there was a misunderstanding about first name and last name, so they gave him both – David Chang-Yen. I guess it’s pretty common in Guyana; we also have some family members whose last name is Lui-Hing. So it’s one of my middle names, but it’s my mom’s last name, and every Chang-Yen in the world is probably related to us.

Life is swell.
I decided to add Chang-Yen because, well, it’s part of my name, and I’m trying to feel more at home with being somewhat part of the (surprisingly large) Guyanese diaspora. But then again, I’m also part of the Chinese one, the Danish one, the Scottish one… it’s complicated.
I just found out I’m going to Chengdu next spring to study Mandarin for a little while, so I’m taking a year off from school in Toronto until then to stay home and work. What about you? How are things on your side of the world? What are people saying about the violence in Gaza and Israel and Lebanon these days?

That is the characters I think you would use too, but nobody in my family knows for sure. MY great-grandparents were from Guangdong, but they both died not long ago and nobody in my my family speaks that dialect anymore. We don’t even know if the village still exists.

I din’t spell the right character s of your Chinese name:Chang Yen,cause I din’t read the second character in the right way.I think ‘Yen’ is soundes more like 银,尹,胤 or 吟,you can choose anyone you think is correct, since in Chinese language, there are maybe more than twenty or thirty characters have the same tone, but their meaning is varied.
ps:people in Guangdong provice and Hong Kong speak Cantonese, this language is sounded quite different from mandarin, you can try asking some peole from guangdong or Hong Kong for the tone of the character,it should be more correct.
