Why I want to meet Mahalie
Not only does she know what kerning is, she is excited about the upcoming release of Super Troopers 2. This tells me she has approximately the same number of brain cells as me!

Why just today, I complained about the leading on a Web page. They had a Gill sans light reversing out of a solid black. The type plugged up—and I was on a big monitor.
What are your thoughts on the subject of visually pleasing color? How do people ever get anything printed? What’s the “real” color? My grandfather used to own a printing company in Pittsburgh, but it’s closed now. I worked for a catalog company one summer and they would send files to Texas to be printed. The photographer was always bitching about what happened to the images and color match.

With spot colors it’s pretty simple getting the correct match, as there are a number of standard systems with which all printers are familiar. The Pantone Matching System (PMS) is what we use most prevalently here in the States. If I specify an ink to print as PMS 307, for instance, any printer will know what I’m talking about.
As for photography, this is a little trickier, and the only way to know for sure how the final color will turn out is to be at the physical press plant for a press check while the thing is printing. This is typically fairly expensive and time-consuming as it almost always involves travel, so most of the time the designer and printer will go through a series of color proofs with a color house and UPS or FedEx the changes/comments back to each other. In a nutshell.
