Why I admire Terry Gilliam
Because he’s the best enfant terrible who’s not lost his edge over the years. Sadly, he’s been hampered by studio heads not appreciative of his creative vision. That’s the main reason why his not-so-great films got to be that way.
I wish he could have finished his Don Quixote saga, chronicled in the documentary Lost in La Mancha. It seemed like a brilliant premise, and it held much promise until studio execs started messing with everything.
I first noticed him the same way everyone else did: as the American animator of Monty Python. Most people did not realize that he got his start with Harvey Kurtzman’s publication, Help. In fact, the character of Kurtzmann in Brazil was an hommage to his former boss and cultural hero.
