The Rideau canal is a man-made canal built by Colonel By (British military) in the early 1800s and connects with the Rideau river at “Hog’s Back” and then runs for about 6 miles through the heart of Ottawa, Ontario (our nation’s capital). For about 4.5 of those miles, each year, our National Capital Commission (NCC) floods the canal and it becomes a skating rink!
