The first time I ever heard any of Nina Simone’s songs was when I was watching the movie, Nikita, starring Bridget Fonda. Honestly, when I heard, “Here Comes the Sun” and I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl,” I almost cried. Her music really moved me and I immediately went out and bought her CD. Now, Nina Simone is my “comfort music.” Whenever I feel out of my element, or down and out, or whenever I want a smile on my face, I put her CD on and turn it up as loud as I can. It’s the best way for me to relax.
...was at a dinner that Ashford and Simpson put on for her at their Manhattan restaurant. This was just after the last concert at Carnegie Hall, where I was the only person outside of the crew to get a backstage pass.
Sure helped that my uncle was her promoter! :)
p.s. I can’t wait to see the movie about her, starring Mary J. Blige. I’ve met Nina a few times, and the things I’ve witnessed could only belong in a movie.
She is my idol. I saw her in concert once before she died.
(I would tell what she stood up and yelled about the president but that’d be naughty of me ;)
