A story about Sarah Vowell

Met her at the signing at Clean and Well-Lighted Place for Books in San Francisco. Was walking with my date later and her car passed, probably on her way to the airport as she continued on her book tour. She recognized us and waved at us. That was as cool as she was.

A story about Sarah Vowell

I took my boyfriend on a date to see her read from Assassination Vacation. The bookstore was very crowded and we couldn’t hear very well, but we were first in line to have her sign our books and she seemed friendly. I imagined that had I the foresight to bring her a pie or embroidered handkerchief, maybe we would be best friends today.

The real reason I want to meet Sarah Vowell

That growly, mumbly, vaguely androgynous voice is a hell of a turn-on. I’ve tried to imitate it, but I can’t, so I clearly need a taste of the real thing.

How I met Sarah Vowell

Sarah Vowell came to Amazon.com HQ to do a reading from “Assassination Vacation” for the employees right after the book came out. I’m not sure if she does a lot of that kind of corporate reading—you can imagine that it might feel awkward and weird, giving a reading at the offices of a big stupid online bookseller—but she handled it well. She was, of course, extremely charming and funny.

A story about Sarah Vowell

She did a reading from “Assassination Vacation” at a local bookstore a few months ago. Sure, I liked her book “Radio On” and enjoyed her on “This American Life”, but mostly I went because a male friend really fancied her and needed company.

After the reading (which was, of course, funny, engaging and informative), we went up for the book signing. Sarah was most gracious to my friend who was nervous as anything – she must deal with a lot of bookish boys’ crushes – and I really admire that.
