A story about Octavia Butler

We Love you Octavia. What an phenomenal talent. Her genius spilled across the pages of her novels with highly intelligent protagonists and characters of diverse backgrounds – always thinking and working out major issues with humanity.

Any one of her books would easily be of solid intrigue.
I saw her speak for the first time on PBS and she was this charming, thoughtful and engaging woman. I am so so sorry I never had the pleasure of meeting her.
Everyone should read her books. Not only are they thought-provoking but they are packed with gripping plots.
Check out Patternmaster, for one thing and you’ll see what I’m talking about. You will devour every one of her books afterward. (We also lost another star, one of a kind science fiction writer as well: Madeline L’Engle.)

This is so cliche but: there will never be another writer like her.

Why I admire Octavia Butler

such amazing talent gone. I have become that annoying person who keeps giving her patternmaster books as gifts. on occasion more than once to the same person. when that happens, i suggest they leave them in a public place for others to find.

A story about Octavia Butler

I went to a book signing she did for Fledgling and I am so very glad I did. Who knew she would pass away so soon after?? Really very, very sad. I would like to have seen what she would write next.

A story about Octavia Butler

I am so glad I got to meet Octavia Butler before she died. She was an amazing woman. I got to here her read twice, talked with her once briefly and once at more length; she signed my copy of Kindred, and agreed to do an interview with Real Change, our local street newspaper. She still is, and always will be, one of the greatest American authors, in my Absolutely Never Humble Opinion.

A story about Octavia Butler

I’ve wanted to meet Octavia Butler since I was a teenager and read Patternmaster. When I moved to Los Angeles five years ago I had in the back of my mind doing a Salinger hunt and turning up at her doorstep to sip inspiration from the fountain. (I’m sure that would have been much appreciated). Unfortunately, I never did it. I never even knew that she had moved to Washington until a friend sent me an article about her death. She was at the top of my list of admired writers and I deeply regret that I’ll never have the opportunity to shake her hand and tell her how much her work meant to me.

I’m really saddened by Butler’s death… now I’ll never get to shake her hand and thank her for inspiring me.

As a woman, a Black woman, a fan of speculative fiction and a writer, I think Octavia Butler is amazing! She’s already done what I have dreamed of doing.

A story about Octavia Butler

She talked about how Lt. Uhura was quite an inspiration for her in the 60s, and how she was determined to become a writer despite her family thinking she’d never make a living at it.

Truly an inspiration for me.
