How I met Orson Scott Card

I drove, with my friend in tow, to Philly from NY to hear a lecture and have my old battered copy of “Ender’s Game” and my new shiny copy of “Shadow of the Giant” to be signed.

I was in complete “fan-boy” mode and it was wonderful. I only wish I could take his writing classes in North Carolina.

He signed his books for me, and said I was his hero (backstory not included). Needless to say, I would love to meet with him again.

Till the next book signing!

A story about Orson Scott Card

I had breakfast with him. We discussed current political events.

He was very witty and opinionated.

A story about Orson Scott Card

I listened to his lecture on a tour and he signed his book for me. He’s brilliant! He gave me this advice about naming your child Orson (which we almost did): “Orson is a hard name for a young person; if you must use it, give them an easier middle name so they have a choice.” From his bios, I learned that as an adolescent and through college, he went by “Scott”.

Why I want to meet Orson Scott Card

He seems to be a really good, interesting and inteligent person! and I love his writing! I’ve read 12 of his books!

A story about Orson Scott Card

I’ve seen him give talks about 3 times now… he’s a humorous and engaging speaker for the most part.

Why I want to meet Orson Scott Card

He’s one of the more interesting and open-minded Mormons I’ve read. But his non-fictional essays surprise me and remind me that he’s still a reasonably conservative Mormon.

Why I want to meet Orson Scott Card

I love all his books.

How I met Orson Scott Card

I saw him at a book reading in Lexington, KY, at Joseph-Beth Booksellers. I awkwardly told him, as he was signing my Ender’s books, that I had introduced my mom to his books and gotten him another reader. I don’t know what I was expecting as a reply, but I don’t think he said anything. Now, when I look back on the experience, I am saddened because I could have said just about anything else and looked cooler than I did. If Orson Scott Card remembers me at all, it’s only as a small dorky blip in the back of his mind, associated forever with another small, dorky blip named “dorky blip’s mom.”

for shame.

Why I like Orson Scott Card

Scott used to do these “Secular Humanist Revivals” in the style of old-time southern tent meetings. Totally hilarious sendup of the point where religion and science meet. The latter ones were to crowds of hundreds of people under big tents.

A story about Orson Scott Card

I almost got the chance to meet him as he did a booksigning in my town. However, I was foiled. The end.
