A story about Amy Tan
I came really close to meeting her. I saw her at an author speak in Dallas and, hadn’t I been depending on the last train, I would have met her.

She was surrounded by over-achieving highschool graduates (including me) and there was this great exchange. (It was a long time ago so I’m paraphrasing.)
Chinese guy: You do an amazing job of depicting Chinese mothers!
Other people made noises of agreement
Amy Tan: People say my mothers are like Italian mothers too, and Jewish mothers. I think it might just be mothers.
Also, she had two tiny dogs in her purse.
Met her at a book signing, late 90s, in the western suburbs of Chicago. Wish I had something more brilliant to say to her, rather than “I love your writing!”
also spoke at UB a few years ago. told a really funny story about how, when doing a book reading at barnes and noble, she picked up cliff notes for her book. she started laughing about all the “symbolism” they said was in the book. it wasn’t. according to her cliff note biography, she also dating an “organized criminal”... she said he was a hippie who liked to get stoned.
amy tan was a blast, i’d love to hear her speak again.
