Amy Sedaris (placeholder)

Don’t let the sweet smile and wholesome, inoffensive looks fool you: Amy Sedaris is an adroit comedienne who specialized in skewering societal conventions and revealing the dysfunctional manias that lie beneath the mannered fronts people present. A Second City alum, Sedaris first came to the public’s attention in 1995 as a writer, performer and co-creator of the Comedy Central sketch comedy series “Exit 57,” which also featured the writing of her older brother, acclaimed author David Sedaris. After parts on Broadway and a few film appearances, Sedaris snared her breakthrough role as the clueless-but-earnest Jerri Blank—a 46-year-old runaway, ex-con, former drug addict and alcoholic prostitute who returns to her parents’ house and attends high school as a freshman and draws all the wrong conclusions from the weekly life lessons she learns—on Comedy Central’s “Strangers With Candy” in 1999, a parody of afterschool specials which she also co-wrote and co-created. From there the actress laid claim to showy and memorable guest stints on popular TV series such as “Just Shoot Me” and “Sex and the City” before graduating to big screen supporting roles. In 2002 she had an antic turn as wealthy hotel visitor in the Jennifer Lopez romantic comedy “Maid In Manhattan.”

A story about Amy Sedaris

i was ten minutes off the bus, first time in new york city. i met up with an old friend and we went to her cafe for a much needed coffee straight away. amy sedaris was sitting down with janeane garofalo, having coffee n’ chat. i was giddy with excitement. the cafe, where my friend worked part time as barista, was a place where Amy S. sold her famous cupcakes. good times, man, good times. if only i’d had enough guts to say “yo”

Why Amy Sedaris should want to meet me

because me and her could bake cupcakes and i’m a really good bunny drawer and we could have bunny cupcakes together and it would be basically awesome

Why I admire Amy Sedaris

She’s unique, whip smart and charismatic; kooky and brilliant. The defining moment for me was when she appeared on the Colbert Report and did an aerobic demo with Colbert. Freak’in hilarious.

How I met Amy Sedaris

She was in Williamsburg, Brooklyn yesterday, promoting her book I LIKE YOU: HOSPITALITY UNDER THE INFLUENCE and selling several other quirky things at the Fred Flare Carnival of Cute... It was quite serendipitous… I was walking back towards the Bedford subway stop, and saw a sign that said Meet Amy Sedaris today. So I did. And i think i mumbled some embarrassed thing about how much I admire her and her brother’s work… You know… the kind of thing you say and then just want to sink into the floor afterwards.

At any rate, despite my bumbling-ness, she was quite gracious and gave me a matchbook that she’d made (i think)—even though i did not buy anything.

Classy lady.

How I met Amy Sedaris

...was yesterday at a book signing at Park Road Books in Charlotte. I dressed (very convincingly, might I add) as Jerri two Halloweens ago. Wellll, it so happens many digital pics were taken that night and I have a friend who is a fabric artist/designer. We made Amy a 20”x20” pillow with me as Jerri on the front and a bunch of friends who all went to the book signing signed the backside of the pillow with favorite quotes from SWC. She was a little taken aback with the similarities. I’m hoping she’ll use it as a throw pillow in her living room somewhere. It’d be nice if she brought it with her to her next David Letterman interview.

If none of you have been to one of the book signings promoting ‘Hospitality’, she does a couple of craft demonstrations before the Q&A and then the signings. One of her craft demos involved making the panty hose/bean eye relief thing. Since she only uses the cut-off legs, she winged the panty part onto a shelf of Mother Goose books that was beside her. When I finally got to her to sign the book, my SWC DVD, and present her with the pillow, I asked her if I could have the panties-by-the-wayside. She even autographed the crotch for me!

She is one truly down to earth and absolutely hysterical individual. It was a real treat to be able to meet her in person.

Why I admire Amy Sedaris

She is one of those beautiful people who seem completely unaware of that fact. She is also extremely funny and delightful. I think she also has the added advantage of being a Carolinian.
