I went to to a talk at NYU a few yers ago and bell hooks and Johnetta Cole (right after she left Spelman) were on the panel. Afterwards, I shook bell hooks’ hand. She was really gracious.
A couple of years later, she was on Book Span and I emailed her a question. She answered it on TV!
I am in the process of reading all of bell hooks’ books. i think that she has an amazing brain and is at the top of the heap when it comes to cultural observation and criticism.

hooks’ book Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center was the first book we read in my first Women’s Studies course. It was an amazing and affecting experience to read it, and remains a significant influence on my thinking.
She is my girl! I love her. The first real book about feminist theory was her first book “Ain’t I a Woman”? As an African American young woman, it spoke volumes to me that non-women of color feminists hadn’t. It spoke to my reality. She is one of the many activist/authors that I continue to read to further understand feminist/womanist theory and movement. She was my jumping off point, and is still my base…my “shero”, in a long line of beautiful black women.
