A story about Walter Cronkite
I had a quiet lunch with him in the press room at a spring training game in Florida, back in the early 90’s. Very friendly guy, short, talkative, and a baseball fan!
Why I want to meet Walter Cronkite
He was, to many, the conscience of America, and the face of the news.
We need more of him.
How I met Walter Cronkite
My j-school was named after Cronkite—Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Telecommunication—and he came to Tempe every year to visit with students and give an award to a famous journalist at an annual luncheon.
I got tickets to two of those luncheons through work (I was a designer for the campus newspaper). After the first luncheon, I got in line to shake Cronkite’s hand. All the people around me clutched copies of his autobiography to their chests; all I had was my AP Stylebook—which he signed!
Up on the podium, he was very much a Voice of Authority. In person, he was quite warm and friendly, offering a word of encouragement to this wannabe-journalist.
I still keep that AP Stylebook close at hand.
