Why I want to meet Henry Rollins

Have seen him three times for spoken word shows…a mind that moves that fast and seeks out so much experience and information is a man that I have to meet.

A story about Henry Rollins

He puts the most meaning in the least amount of words. He can explain something so vividly and so precise. I can relate to a lot of what he is saying. His emotions are so intense and he can actually discribe them.

A story about Henry Rollins

I am sort of in charge of finding talent, new or old for an ex Rose Tattoo member.

Why I want to meet Henry Rollins

Well. Why do I want to meet Henry Rollins? Because he’s my hero, and I think he may be more similar to me than any person I’ve ever met. The first time I heard the track “I Know You” from Black Coffee Blues, I was scared, because I thought he actually was talking about me. When he talks about the way he feels around people, I can’t help but agree with everything. He never fails to amaze me with his tales of things he has done, places he has been, how much I think like him. Henry Rollins is my idol.

Why I want to meet Henry Rollins

he’s henry rollins. he speaks his mind, and sometimes says what i’m thinking.

A story about Henry Rollins

Rollins Band played in San Diego years ago. I still love Rollins Band. Their stuff really hits deep, even to this day.

Rollins talked to the kids in the back lot, barefoot and all. He was witty and brutal, and everything you’d expect him to be. But despite his rage, he has a deep love for his fans, and it showed.

I told him how much “Weight” affected me as a kid. It still does actually. And he could sense my life story was not a pretty one. So he did something I didn’t expect. He gave me a hug.

Then, for some strange reason, he signed my copy of Black Flag “Damaged”. What pisses me off is, I can’t find that record anywhere.

But, for one alienated little bastard, he reminded me that troubles and obstacles don’t define you. It’s what we do about it, and how we live with them that does.

Those were fifteen minutes that I’ll never forget.

The real reason I want to meet Henry Rollins

Well, I’m pretty sure he’d rip me to shreds, but I’d love to get into a political discussion with him. From what I’ve heard from his spoken word albums and his music, we share some of the same beliefs on some things. But I’d love to play the devils’ advocate and see where I’d measure up. Either that or just talk music. That would probably be more useful in me not catching a beating.
Either way, it would be an unforgettable experience.

The last time I saw Henry Rollins

Was at the Pomona Glasshouse. The show was part of the WM3 tour. After the show, myself and two friends remained in the venue hoping for an opportunity to encounter the man himself. When that did not happen after a while, we found the entrance to the backstage area, which appeared not to be guarded by any sort of bouncers at that particular time. We walked in to see a line waiting to talk with Henry Rollins and quickly got into to it so as not to appear as if we did not belong there. After waiting my turn behind some guy who was boring Henry with lame questions about a screenplay he was writing, suddenly the path was cleared between myself and the man. I had quickly made a game plan with my friends who were with me that I would ask Henry to sign an old magazine, take a quick picture, and sneak in a request for a quick hug, in that order. When I gave Henry my magazine and asked if he could sign it he grabbed it kind of abruptly, and I complained that he better not rip it cause I’ve had it for a long time. He just said “I’m wont” and smiled at me. After he returned it to me, I asked him “Could I also bother you for a quick photo…. and-a-hug” the last part I threw in very rapidly thinking that I had said it too softly and rapidly for him to have heard me anyway. Hey, I had to give it a shot. Then I moved to his side just to stand within a somewhat close proximity of him as to appear that I was taking a picture with him. Well, as I moved to his side, suddenly I felt his arm around my shoulder and him pull me toward his side. My friend took the picture and I started to take a step away from him toward my friends when suddenly I feel Henry’s grasp of my shoulder tighten. In a complete state of confusion, I just see Henry’s chest getting closer and closer to my face. My hands were crushed in his mid-section as well as my nose and glasses up against my face between his man-boobs. He had just performed so the grey sweatshirt he was wearing was moist and warm. He held me crushed up against him for a few seconds then said, “There you go, sweetheart’” and then released me. I honestly had no idea what had just taken place, even less so why it had. I think I just walked away sorta trembling. After a whle I remembered that I had actually requested him to hug me but completely forgot about it. Henry is such a sweetheart, don’t be intimidated by that whole I’m a tough guy act. He’s like this annoying older brother that likes to give noogies! Hello McFly anybody home!

Why I admire Henry Rollins

He is very intelligent and Punk Rock at the same time… actually the whole movement (real Punks) were people that were to intelligent to be brainwashed by the Machine. I Have love all of Henry Rollins work from Black Flag, Rollin’s Band, his support of the West Memphis Three and his Spoken Word Tour… he is a genius when it comes to political science and the interpretation of how we as Amerikans perceive our Safety Net Society.

How I met Henry Rollins

He performed at my tiny college, years back. I completely connected with his unique perspective. Time to check back in with him.
