Why I admire Anton Newcombe
I just got done watching that documentary DIG! on television and I was saddened to see such a talented group and such a talented man (Anton Newcombe) be portrayed basically as some lunatic drug addict. Sure, some people including members of the Dandy Warhols, gave him credit for his talent, but I feel he was attacked as a person. I want to meet him because he is inspiring and interesting. To tell you the truth, I have met people with bigger egos. I thought the music he created while with BJM was brilliant and I hope to hear some of his own stuff since they are no more. I know what it is like to be irritable and irate at times… it doesn’t make you any less of a person and it should certainly never take away from what you love. The thing I loved the most about what I saw was that each performance started off with him showing his appreciation, as though to make a fresh start. But the hecklers and asshole audience members just antagonized him. At least he tried to keep it together and then when attacked… he stood up for himself. He defended his creativity as something to be protected. If the audience disagreed, he stopped the show. Good for him. Dude, Anton, I used to live in Portland… and it DOES suck there. Never go back. It brought me to the lowest point in my life and I can’t fix it as easily as it all happened. I am back in my hometown in El Paso, Texas… if you ever come through here, give me a holler. clashcity19@comcast.net
