How I met Douglas Adams

I “met” Douglas Adams at a reading and book-signing in a bookstore. I was just in the audience and was able to get a copy of my “Hitchhiker’s Guide” tome signed by him. He was late for the event due to dealing with severe back pains and maybe even a late air-flight. Despite that hiccup, he was as entertaining and witty in person as he is in writing.

I love all his works

Why I want to meet Douglas Adams

So I could thank him for bringing such joy and brilliance to the Universe.

Why I admire Douglas Adams

This man made me feel ok about the fact that I gave up religion. He didn’t make my mind, I had come to my own final conclusion a few years before I heard of him. But he made the whole thing funny, I felt that someone, out there thought the same things I did about religion, and that it was all right, and made perfect sense to have those thoughts/feelings. Thank you for “the salmon of doubt”, Douglas. And Dirk. And your crazy invented words. Thanks for getting rid of my “I-don’t-believe-in-anything” guilt trip. Unfortunately some people still don’t know the truth…and I guess they never will.
You are number one on my list, Doug! I love your writings. Be at peace, wherever you are/or not are…who knows…well, I guess you do now… Love!

A story about Douglas Adams

I’ve never met him and it killed me the day I found out he was no longer with us.

I remember sometime in 2003-2004, I was in a communications tech class and we were watching a movie about the development of computer companies like Microsoft, etc. Anyway, suddenly, this British man comes on and starts talking (like any student XP I’m only half awake) The teacher (a regular goofball) does an impression of his accent (trying to be funny), we all laugh, and move on . . . then, I remembered the name – ‘Douglas Adams’. I look at the stack of books on my desk and see that it’s the same name of the author who wrote the book I had just started reading – ‘The Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy’.

2006 – 2007
I was taking a tour of Washington College and I walk in to take a look at the Literary House. I was looking around and I saw the chalkboard _ (see picture) That made me feel all warm and squishy inside.

Douglas Adams lives on!

Again, too late. But, cheers! just the same.

A story about Douglas Adams

True story: I spent an evening partying with the one and only Douglas Adams in the French Quarter in New Orleans in 1991 when he was promoting his book “Last Chance To See”.

He came to Tulane University, where I was a student for a lecture, and as a member of the group that brought him to campus, I had the honor of going out for a night on the town with him!

The man was an absolute riot, and HUGE. I remember walking down Bourbon Street and coming across “Big Daddy’s” If you’ve ever been to New Orleans, you’ve seen the famous Legs. Well, this was his first time. He just stopped and stared in wonder. I could see his mind working and was convinced I’d read some reference in a future book. He thought it was hysterical.

Mr. Adams was, in real life, as entertaining as he was to read. He was a genuinely nice fellow, and it was one of the most fun celebrity outings I’ve ever had.

Another author I was fortunate enough to get a signed copy of their book. But didn’t get to meet him. Sigh.

Why I want to meet Douglas Adams

His words are genius, his worlds more so.

I’ll meet him someday in some other place, do ye kennit?

The last time I saw Douglas Adams

The last time I saw Doug was at his house. I was doing something to his Mac for him – can’t remember what. I do remember a huge model of Starship Titanic on the desk.

He left the party much too early.
