Musician and interesting guy. He has a gift for the unusual and poignant metaphor, a wonderful and distinctive voice, and an odd sense of humour.

Trouser Press called Waits ‘at once a throwback and a visionary.’

His songs are best known to the general public in the form of cover versions by more visible artists, such as Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, and Rod Stewart. Although Waits’s albums have met with mixed commercial success in his native United States, they have occasionally achieved gold album sales status in other countries.

Actually, Tom Waits is a slightly infrequent customer at the restaurant I work at. Last year he came in about six times while I was working. Most of the time he doesn’t order food but drinks San Pelligrino while his family eats.

I got to see the concert film, Big Time, in San Francisco (where it was filmed) at a funky little theater on Haight Street called the Red Vic. Also, I knew this exotic dancer who worked at a place that use to be near the Warfield Theater when that concert was filmed. He visted her in her fantasy booth and she said he was a really cool guy.

i love tom waits; his work makes me feel alive—when i listen to his music, or watch him in an old interview it makes me laugh, think, drink a beer, cry—then i know i’m still alive. i respect his want for privacy, & this makes him all the more mysterious. i love this feeling. the work he has done with jim jarmousch motivates me to stick around to await their next project.

The real reason I want to meet Tom Alan Waits
There was a feature article on the T-dog in Paste magazine some time ago. In the teaser to the article, the author mentions how passionate Tom was about his reading list. He gave that author a list of books he HAD to read. The author, curse him, did not include the list!
Tom, I want that list! Next time you’re in the Denver/Boulder area, look me up. I’ll take you out for some BBQ.
