Michael Stipe (placeholder)

John Michael Stipe (born January 4, 1960 in Decatur, Georgia) is the founding member, lead singer and creative head of the American rock band R.E.M. Stipe has become well-known (and occasionally parodied) for the “mumbling” style of his early career and for his complex, surreal lyrics, as well as his social and political activism. Stipe and the other members of R.E.M. have become godfathers of alternative rock and are perhaps the first such band to achieve mainstream success.

Stipe met Peter Buck, Bill Berry and Mike Mills in 1980 (see 1980 in music) while studying photography and painting at the University of Georgia. They formed R.E.M. that year and issued their debut single, “Radio Free Europe”, on Hib-Tone. The song was a college radio success and the band signed to I.R.S. Records for the release of the Chronic Town EP one year later. Beginning with 1983’s Murmur, R.E.M. released a series of critically acclaimed albums with a wide variety of mainstream success. A few hit singles and growing visibility as a social activist eventually made Stipe a star and also earned him a devoted fanbase. The late River Phoenix was among his friends, and 1994’s Monster had the dedication “For River” in the liner notes. The late singer of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, was also one of his close friends. According to Stipe, they planned a collaboration project, but didn’t manage to compose or record anything before Cobain died. He is also godfather of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love’s daughter, Frances Bean Cobain.

In 1998, Stipe published a collection called Two Times Intro: On the Road with Patti Smith and worked on Single Cell, a film production company which released several arthouse / indie movies (Velvet Goldmine, starring Ewan McGregor, as well as Being John Malkovich, American Movie in 1999, American Psycho in 2000 and Saved! in 2004). The company as a whole recently purchased the rights to Canadian author Douglas Coupland’s All Families are Psychotic and is considering it as a film.

In a 2001 Newsweek interview Stipe described himself as a “queer artist”. In previous interviews he has described himself as “an equal opportunity lech” and said he doesn’t define himself as gay, straight or bisexual, but that he was attracted to and had relationships with both men and women. Stipe was once very close to fellow singer Natalie Merchant and has recorded a few songs with her, including one entitled “Photograph” which appeared on a pro-choice benefit album entitled Born to Choose.

He wrote haikus for a book published by Soft Skull Press called The Haiku Year.

In 2006, Stipe, in collaboration with Coldplay’s Chris Martin, released a solo cover version of Joseph Arthur’s “In the Sun” for the Hurricane Katrina disaster relief. It reached number one on the Canadian Singles Chart. Also in 2006, Stipe appeared on the song “Broken Promise” on the Placebo release Meds.

How I met Michael Stipe

I met him at a private REM gig at the Tabernacle in Notting Hill in 1999.

It was filmed for MTV but not sure if it was ever aired.

During filming there was a technical hitch, so he got bored and started wandering around, so I saw an opportunity to get my guitar autographed.

I was star struck, like a complete buffoon! I was holding the guitar at a weird angle, and he got quite impatient and said can you hold it flat, but I was being thick due to nerves, so he did it for me!

He then tried being sociable and said “so do you play guitar”, and I replied with one of the stupidest lines in my life “yes but not as well as you”. He glared at me and said “yes but of course I’m the lead singer”, and I said “I know”. I walked off feeling like an idiot. I knew he was the singer but my brain had malfunctioned due to being star struck.

He probably thought “ignorant pr!ck”, lol :o)

He did a good gig too :o)

Why I admire Michael Stipe

great lyrics, magnificent voice, mysterios personality, incredible eyes, unbelieaveble gaze, and a way too much chrasma…what else a guy asks for more :)
look at him, i mean just look at him…

Why I want to meet Michael Stipe

I’d like to know how he got to composing and playing his music. I’ve met someone who knows him and his sister. The little he told me has got me curious.

My favorite memory of Michael Stipe

I’ve seen Michael a couple of times, the last being when he performed, with just about everyone worth while, at the Vote For Change Concert in Washington.

But the first time I saw him, and REM, was at a little house in Charlotte, North Carolina. Well, the house was converted into an alternative music club called “The Milestone”, but it was about the size of a living room…and there were only about 20 people in the whole place.

Michael had hair but few fans. How times have changed!

Even then, at their inception, Michael had charisma, and I would have betted that they were going to hit it big.
Alas, I never bet when I should…

A story about Michael Stipe

More Athens love! I technically haven’t met Michael Stipe… just voyeuristically run into him, like everyone at UGA. He was standing behind my friends at a concert at the 40 watt, and he walked by us once in a cowboy hat while we were enjoying some pitchers at taco stand downtown. Freshman year a friend went to one of REM’s famous in cognito shows at Georgia Theatre, but I didn’t go… damn. I hear he used to hang at the Manhattan all the time. Anyway, I love what a decent guy he is and appreciate all those guys do for Athens.

The last time I saw Michael Stipe

I saw him sitting outside of his vege restaurant, I was leaving church…good times.

Why things are awkward between me and Michael Stipe

I first met Michael Stipe after a political rally in Athens when I was a student at UGA. I was a volunteer at the rally and he was a speaker. Afterwards, a friend and I were walking downtown and we saw him approaching. My friend was about to faint from the excitement of him being so nearby, and I told her she should say something about his rally speech. She was way too nervous, so as he walked by, I stopped him and thanked him for participating. I told him what I thought of his speech, and he was very gracious. After he left, my friend of course about died.

After that initial meeting, I began to see him all the time around town, especially at Monday Night Disco at the 40 Watt. He was always really friendly and seemed like he was having a good time. I’m sure he appreciated the fact that for the most part, people left him alone. I saw him so frequently that we would say hi and smile at each other in that friendly, “I see you all the time but don’t know you at all” way.

One night, I went to the Digable Planets show with some friends and he was there too. Thing is, he had brought a friend along—Neneh Cherry. She was one of my idols…I totally loved this girl.

Anyway, I was hanging out at the back of the Georgia Theater with my friends and Michael Stipe was hanging out in the same area with his friends. My friends and I had been silly that evening and had drawn little tattoos on each other with black Sharpies. Michael saw a marking on my leg and said, “You’ve got something on your leg….” I giggled and explained it was Sharpie and it was on purpose. He shrugged it off, probably thinking “stupid kid.” :P

So the attention for some reason turned to Neneh at that point, and I couldn’t help myself but gush, “She is a goddess!

Michael looked at me kinda funny, and then he just turned away. I guess the fact that I still got a little starstruck made me less cool or something.

Oh well…it was fun being on “speaking terms” with him while it lasted! :)

A story about Michael Stipe

I’ve known Michael since 1999. He is probably one of the nicest people I’ve known. We both like Galaxy Quest a whole lot, especially the bad dub-overs of the word “Fuck”
