Why I admire Ludwig van Beethoven

This man was a true rebel, an anarchist who hated the world and wanted to break it. His compositions give this picture to me, and the stories of the tragedy that was his life just reinforce that view. I think he is one of the key figures in the development of modern music. The fruits of his labor fed a whole era of classical symphony, not to mention how more popular musical genres have later assimilated ideas that he made famous.

I doubt he’d want anything to do with me, but I’d still want to have met this person.

Why I want to meet Ludwig van Beethoven

was a German composer and pianist. He is widely regarded as one of history’s greatest composers, and was the predominant figure in the transitional period between the Classical and Romantic eras in Western classical music. His reputation and genius have inspired—and in many cases intimidated—ensuing generations of composers, musicians, and audiences.

Born in Bonn, Germany, he moved to Vienna, Austria, in his early twenties, and settled there, studying with Joseph Haydn and quickly gaining a reputation as a virtuoso pianist. In his late twenties he began to lose his hearing, and yet continued to produce notable masterpieces throughout his life in the face of this personal disaster. Beethoven was one of the first composers who worked as a freelance – arranging subscription concerts, selling his compositions to publishers and gaining financial support from a number of wealthy patrons – rather than being permanently employed by the Church or by an aristocratic court.

Among my favorite works include “Moonlight Sonata”, “Eroica” and many more.

A story about Ludwig van Beethoven

He always suprises me. You could argue I’ve a poor memory – and lose – but each time I hear something by Beethoven, I get these amazing skin buzz, and the feeling that my brain has jumped into a higher orbital. He reaches through my frontal lobe, grabs my limbic system and shakes it.

I’d like to ask him what it’s like to be an immortal because of genius. I think, for once, I’d get an honest answer.
