She has so much passion and compassion. She inspires me to make a change in this world.
I first came across Isabel Allende in high school as part of a mandatory reading assignment for my english class. After reading the book, she instantly became one of my favorite authors. Not only is her writing enjoyable but you also learn more about Chile and the history (or herstory c=) of the country. Her books are fantastic reads that come from the heart.
My english teacher my senior year in high school recommended The House of the Spirits to me and I got around to reading it my freshmen year in college. I loved the book and recommended it to my fiancée, Estella, who loved it as well (she read it in both English and Spanish). She recommended the book to my aunt.
This spring, we got to meet her when she spoke at Texas State University where Estella is getting her MFA in Poetry.
I saw her speak at an event in Boston, and she is without a doubt the funniest, most inspiring woman. She spoke about the need to live passionately, to hold onto each day, and to not be afraid to laugh. Most of all, she said don’t ever be afraid to love.
She told me once, when I was interviewing her for my radio show, that she loves fiction because she’s such a good liar: “My husband has one version of how we met. I have 13.”
