David was a communication professor for thirteen years, and has now left the world of academics. He’s been using Ruby, and involved in the community, since 2000. He’s one of the organizers of the annual International Ruby Conference.

How I met David A. Black

I’ve been a *nix/python guy for awhile now and I was interviewed by a company that I really wanted to work for. They were all about RoR and I had little experience with it.

I blindly emailed David and after a few phone calls and tutoring he came to my house and we studied Ruby and Rails for a few days. David rocks! He is passionate about what he does and a very good instructor.

Why I admire David A. Black

He’s been involved with the Ruby community for quite a while.

He’s slightly conservative regarding the language, but that makes for very interesting feedback.

He’s given me advise and feedback about my own Ruby projects more than once. He really helped me to get involved with the language.

David Black and I started Ruby Central, Inc. after co-organizing (with Dave Thomas) the First International Ruby Conference. We’ve been co-conspirators ever since.

Why I like David A. Black

David is a Ruby guru, hard-working good guy who’s made RubyCentral and RubyConf something great for everybody involved with Ruby.

David A Black, Chad Fowler and I were amoung the first people to arrive at the very first Ruby Conference in 2001. I remember walking around Thursday evening trying to find a place to grab a bite to eat.

He schooled me on class_eval, instance_eval and module_eval at our last #nyc.rb meeting. And of course he is the man for handling RubyConf.

The last time I saw David A. Black

I stuck out my hand and said “thanks”.

He responded, “Thanks?”

To which I replied, “Thanks for RubyConf”.
