Vikram Seth was born in India in 1952. After his early education in India he took his undergraduate degree in philosophy, politics and economics from Oxford University. He was a graduate student in economics at Stanford University and for two years at Nanjing University. He was a Wallace Stegner Fellow in Creative Writing at Stanford during 1977-78. He has written three novels: A Suitable Boy(1993), The Golden Gate(1986) which is a novel in verse and An Equal Music(1999); five books of poems: Mappings(1980), The Humble Administrator’s Garden(1985), All You Who Sleep Tonight(1990), Three Chinese Poets(1992), and Beastly Tales(1991). From Heaven Lake(1983) is a non-fictional account of his travels through Xinjiang and Tibet.
