Why I admire Shigeru Miyamoto
More than anybody working in any medium, Shigeru Miyamoto’s games have given me so much joy throughout my life. Starting with Donkey Kong Jr, then up to Super Mario Bros. and it’s sequels, I have fond memories of playing these games with my dad, who has sadly since passed away.
My dad was a landscaper, and he often had work on the other side of the state, so he would bring either myself or my sister on trips with him sometimes. I have fond memories from when I was a little girl, going with my dad on a trip in a rented Ryder truck and stopping at a truck stop along the way. We would eat breakfast there, and then stop and play at the arcade. The game was Donkey Kong Jr, and we spent a long time and a lot of quarters on it before we left.
I also remember when my family first got a Nintendo Entertainment System, and every one in the family was completely addicted to Super Mario Bros. My dad would crack me up, since he was a coin nut when he played. He couldn’t leave a single coin behind, which often meant that Mario ended up in a pit below as my dad scrambled to get a midair coin. It didn’t matter to my dad that he lost a turn, as long as he got that coin he was happy. :D
To this day, when I play Super Mario Bros. I often think of my dad, and I will sometimes grab a coin in a hard to reach spot, as my small dedication to his memory.
So, I thank Shigeru Miyamoto for the fun times and great memories. Without your wonderful games I wouldn’t have these wonderful fond memories to cherish. :)
