Why I want to meet Buckminster Fuller
An architect, poet, inventor and visionary.
genius pure genius. one of the most hopeful human beings ever to ride spaceship earth.
Shortly before his death, Bucky spoke to a full house at a church in Cambridge. The topic was “Is higher education failing mankind?” He felt that it was. Among the things he said that people never learn is that:
1. There is no up and down.
2. There are no solids.
3. There is no sunrise or sunset.
4. Triangles, rather tetrahedrons, are the basic structure of the universe (which he demonstrated using dowels).
After the speech, several of us retired to the basement, and we acknowledged one another, but exchanged no words. I am dreadfully shy around great people, and was, to me, one of the greatest.
On the way home, I had the sense that the earth had disappeared beneath my feet. It lost its solidity, and I, my up-down orientation.
