A story about Jack Bruce
No, I never got to see Cream…but alas they were only together a few months. I did, however, get to see Jack the Bruce and Ginger Baker when they came to Charlotte.
My bud, Ken Phillips, and I had sidled up to the smallish venue to see what had long been one of our favorite bands. (Ken is a drummer.) We thought we were going to be late, but instead we were exactly on time. Well, a few seconds late…
We paid the entrance fee at the door, and just as I handed over my cash…
“In a white room, with black curtains, at the station…”
...filled the warehouse.
Enter horripilations.
What struck me was how strange it was that everyone, even the younguns, sang right along, knowing nearly all the lyrics.
On a personal note, I think Jack the Bruce has been given short shrift when it comes to the contributions of each member. Granted, they are all excellent, but how many more people know Clapton than Bruce?
The PBS special, should it come on in your area, is tremendous. You will see what I mean about Jack though…
