Wong Kar-wai (pronounced Car-Way), Christopher Doyle and William Chang are the triple threat.
I often wondered if the lighting of the great Black and White movies could be used in the Color films and In the Mood for Love gives me my answer of Yes!
Wong Kar-Wai doesn’t use a script in his films which may serve as fertile ground to create. I love the the 2046 trilogy (I guess you can call it that)
Days of Being Wild has an aura that you can literally feel being transported to 1960’s Hong Kong and Leslie Cheung (the best actor in the world hands down – tragically departed from us in ‘03.) was immortalized in this wonderful film.
Wong Kar-Wai like to deal with a choking dissapointments in love… and the films are tragically beautiful…
I greatly admire his use of color. In, In the Mood for Love, I always comfortingly can look back on the Purple/Lavanderish wall in Chow-san’s home that had the light shining on it. I could also taste the noodles bought in that film. Maggie Cheung was a graceful peacock in her well tailored dress.
I haven’t seen Wong Kar-Wai’s latest film with Nora Jones and Jude Law and Natalie Portman “My Blueberry Nights” – but many people at Cannes didn’t like it unfortunately – - however the cinematography is lovely I heard.
