A question I have about Vigdís Finnbogadóttir
How does she really feel about foreign relations and geopolitic pragmatism, mainly as a former head of state of a small european country?
Single mother and President of Iceland in the years 1980 to 1996. When elected in 1980 Vigdís became the world’s first democratically elected female president and head of state.
Vigdís is also the founding chair of the Council of Women World Leaders, the first chair of the UNESCO’s World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology, a member of the club of Madrid and a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for the promotion of linguistic diversity, women’s rights, education and understanding.
Vigdís has received a number of awards in recognition of her work and is an honorary in 18 universities.

I first met Vigdís when she visited our camp at the 1996 national scout jamboree. She spoke a little with us and I had my picture taken with her. I had great respect for her so I was quite proud to have met her – which made it that much worse when I found out the girl I had asked to take a picture of me with her had put her finger over the lens when she took it!
