I went to his talk on the architecture of happiness yeserday at the Seattle Library. It was a great talk. Afterwards I got in the line to sign books and when I got to the front I said, “I didn’t bring my book for you to sign, but can I give you a hug?”
He said, “How about a handshake.” He looked visibly frightened. Haha.
I said, “No. Hug.” And he gave me a hug and people started laughing. Hugs are the new slaps.
Alain de Botton writes about tiny aspects of the human experience that others have failed to deem noteworthy, and makes observations in print that most people have never realized outside their own minds.
i read “essays in love” in spanish and i love it; then i read it in english and i love it so much more!! so, his books encourage me to learn more languages, this way i could read the german copy of “the consolaitons of philosophy” i bought last summer…
In my humble opinion, Stendhal’s « De l’amour » has only been surpassed since 1822 by Alain de Botton’s novel « Essays on Love » .
That said, the following is an understatement: Monsieur de Botton’s other books are exceptionally well-written, insightful, and witty. (D’ailleurs cet écrivain et ses recherches sont plus accessibles que Proust.)
