Why I want to meet Alexander McCall Smith

I saw him last fall at the National Book Festival on the Mall in DC and found him to be such a charming and delightful speaker. He went onstage wearing a kilt, along with his blazer and tie, and would chuckles right before reading the humurous parts of his novels. I loved how he seemed to truly enjoy himself, his work, and his characters; how he was genuinely interested in his readers opinions; and how he seemed so truly content with himself and his life.

I can’t get enough of his books. They’re absolutely charming. Anyone as highly intellectual, humorous, and philosophical as Alexander McCall Smith must be worth meeting.

I met, or perhaps it would be truer to say encountered, Alexander McCall Smith, author of (among other things) the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, at a talk organised by the Scotland Office for St. Andrew’s Day. He had everyone in stitches talking about his membership of the Really Terrible Orchestra, in which he plays the bassoon – or, as he tells it, half a bassoon – and how he and other authors have invoked place, especially Scotland, in their work. A truly kind, compassionate, witty, articulate and intelligent man.
