Peter Munz (placeholder)

Professor of History at the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, and is one of the very few persons to have been students of both Popper and Wittgenstein.

He is the author of many books, including The Place of Hooker in the History of Thought; Problems of Religious Knowledge; The Origin of the Carolingian Empire; Relationship and Solitude: An Inquiry into the Relationship between Myth, Metaphysics and Ethics; Life in the Age of Charlemagne; Frederick Barbarossa: A Study in Medieval Politics; When the Golden Bough Breaks: Structuralism or Typology?; The Shapes of Time: A New Look at the Philosophy of History; Our Knowledge of the Growth of Knowledge: Popper or Wittgenstein?; and Philosophical Darwinism: On the Origin of Knowledge by Means of Natural Selection.

Why I admire Peter Munz

Every time I read him I get caught by his wit, his vast knowledge of the history of ideas and his powerful mind.

He taught me you can do philosophy without being obscure. And that’s badly needed, nowadays…

And then, he studied with both Wittgenstein and Popper…! I would like to ask him what really happened with Wittgenstein’s poker!
