Christopher Meloni was born April 2, 1961 in Washington, D.C. He attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he first began studying acting, graduating in the 1983. After graduation, he went to New York where he continued his studies with Sandford Meisner at the famed Neighborhood Playhouse. He is married and maintains residences in both Los Angeles and New York City. He is best known for his role on the TV series Law & Order: SVU. Actor Chris Meloni did a lot of real-life research to play his rough and tumble cop type on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. While studying at The Neighbourhood Playhouse in his salad days in New York, Meloni had “despicable” roommates, he says. “At least three of them were coke addicts, I figured out later,” says the brawny actor. And he paid the rent using his muscle—as a bouncer. “I’ve seen guys kick through window panes of glass and I’ve been dragged from a car, literally. It was too much abuse for only $ 40 a night.” Meantime, Meloni envisioned himself the misunderstood, struggling artist. “I was writing, reading Henry Miller and Tom Wolfe and Bukowski, being miserable, and trying to figure out how to get an agent. “I fancied myself the Hunter S. Thompson of my time,” he recalls with a chuckle, “with a jaded, jaundiced eye upon the world, writing plays and vignettes on my typewriter.”
