Why I admire Pat Metheny

A PRODIGIOUS jazz guitarist, Pat Metheny (b. 1954) uses his talent and energy as performer and composer in transforming the sounds, rhythms, and spirits of his time to inform and enrich his listeners. His work with the Pat Metheny Group, formed in 1978, is hard to describe—there are elements of folk, world, vocal, even film music—but it remains lyrical and accessible. His esoteric work, notably with Ornette Coleman and Charlie Haden, is fueled by inclusiveness and a passion for trying things. Such accessibility, curiosity, and world mindedness are what make Pat Metheny an inspiring purveyor of jazz in all its ever-evolving diversities.

He was the first artist to come to Kirkland Fine Arts Center after I started working there as a stagehand. He was very nice, and of course an amazing musician!

How I met Pat Metheny

A few years ago I attended a PMG concert in Florida and a bunch of us (mostly jazz guitar students) were waiting outside the venue for him. To be honest I was a bit surprised and pleased that he took the time to come out by himself to greet, shake everyone’s hand and thank them for coming to the show. As a musician I have enormous respect for him, but after that moment, I also gained a great deal of respect for him as a person.
