Yolande Cornelia “Nikki” Giovanni, Jr. (born June 7, 1943, in Knoxville, Tennessee) is an African American poet and author.
She has written more than two dozen books, including volumes of poetry, illustrated children’s books, and three collections of essays. The civil rights and black power movements informed her early poetry, collected in Black Feeling, Black Talk (1968), Black Judgement (1968), and Re: Creation (1970). Giovanni then wrote poems for children throughout the next decade.

An engaging speaker and amazing human being. I can’t begin to discribe the amazing things I have heard come out of this woman’s mouth. I also love that she is so informed on so many topics, as any genius poet should be. She teaches at a public university, and I really wish I went to that school. I would love to take any class from her.
She is supposed to be coming to Mobile this coming Thursday and want to see her for myself; I enjoy her poetry.
I met this brilliant poet at a book signing. She is such a humble person. It was so easy to vibe with her.
She gave a presentation at Governor’s SChool and somehow I ended up eating lunch with her. I remember talking to her about “Field of Dreams” of all things.
