I have seen Helen Caldicott a couple of times, but on one certain occasion, the occasion itself was so rich that I want to recall that one. It was June 12, 1982, and a one million person Disarmament Rally was being held in Central Park. And everybody was there. Both on the stage, and in the crowd.
Carly Simon, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Helen Caldicott…on and on. But they were, by my vantage point, about the size of a pinhead. Literally, not figuratively.
A group of us had taken the train into Manhattan from Boston.
Strange. With a million people in one place, and no incidents. Such a civilized time! Well…
No one has written more on nuclear issues than Dr. Caldicott. None that I know of. I’d also recommend Jonathan Schell.
