How I met Toni Morrison

It was brief, but my husband (before he was my husband) and I went to see “Top Dog/Under Dog” on B’way with Mos Def and Jeffrey Wright. I looked up and who was standing there, Toni Morrison.

I called my mother and tried not to freak out. After I calmed down, I went up to her, thanked her for her work, and shook her hand.

BTW: she was waiting for Sonia Sanchez. They sat together a couple of rows in front of us.

My mother claims that Toni Morrison is the reason she taught me to read. She is an amazing woman and writer—her novels have really made an impact on my life and so has her non-fiction.

I think her eyes are wild.. I wonder if she’s insane. Her books always leave me feeling unsettled and I’m amazed at how she forms her characters. I want to meet her and I don’t. I don’t want to ask her questions that everyone else asks her. I want to know what she dreams at night, what she thinks about in the shower, and during conversations with people. I guess I want a tour of her thoughts when she’s not writing.

I saw Toni Morrison speak live from CC and saw her get into her limo, but I can’t really count those as “meeting” her. She is an amazing person that a person could learn a lot from, and is widely renowned as the greatest novelist alive today. I would love to take one of her classes someday (I think she teaches at Princeton and Yale).
