Why I want to meet Def Leppard

I first heard them on the radio in 1979 and I’ve been hooked ever since. Best damn guitars! In 1983, just before they started headlining, my friend & I saw them at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. They had just finished opening for Billy Squier. We left a bit early and got lost and ended up coming out a door somewhere in the back of the building. We were trying to make our way in the dark, to our car, and then I noticed a limo parked and heard laughter coming from it. I silently freaked. I didn’t know if they were inside but it seemed likely. I didn’t want to freak them out because I don’t think they were expecting anyone to be walking there, so I kept walking as calmly as I could! As I got closer, the laughter stopped and they all got quiet. I glanced in the window as I walked by, and Steve and I locked eyes. So was that it? That was the chance? And I blew it? hehe

How I met Def Leppard

It was August, 1997. I and a friend were headed to Texas, from Louisiana, to see my favorite band, Def Leppard. It would be my third concert.

Somehow we found out where the guys were staying, and were outside the lobby when they arrived. We got autographs and photos…and I was in shock. In those days, I lived, breathed, ate, slept Def Leppard.

Phil was absolutely so kind and cool to us. When he heard we were from Louisiana and planning to drive back that night (it was late at this point), he said he wished we’d stay and wait ‘til morning when it would be safer.

We ended up doing just that – my friend hung out with Joe, Sav, and Vivian in the hotel bar (I was under 21 and just watched woefully from the lobby). When they came down to check out, Phil beamed when he saw us and said, “Oh, I’m so glad you stayed!” How awesome is that? When we were leaving, he ran forward and opened the door for us. I heart that man.

I met everyone – and got them all to sign my Def Leppard jacket – except for Sav, which I do regret.

All in all, it was an amazing experience – the guys, rock legends though they might be, were cool, down-to-Earth, and genuinely cared about their fans. I do hope I get to meet them again someday; in the meantime, I catch every concert that comes our way (the one in New Orleans in 2006 made my fifth Lep concert!)
