Mini Moni ミニモニ。 (placeholder)

Mini Moni ( also known as MiniMoni., mini-moni., etc) was a subgroup of J-pop girl group Morning Musume. They were one of Morning Musume’s most popular subgroups for their entire existence, because of the combination of their outrageous music videos and live performances, their vocal harmonies, and their widely varied musical styles.

The group was founded in late 2000 by Morning Musume member Mari Yaguchi, who had an idea for a subgroup whose members were 150 cm in height or shorter. Yaguchi, and Morning Musume’s songwriter and producer Tsunku, selected two of Morning Musume’s newest members, Ai Kago and Nozomi Tsuji, for the new subgroup, and the trio began performing in concerts as Mini Moni. American-born Mika Todd of Coconuts Musume was later added into the group to give the group “an international flavor”, and Tsunku made them official. Their debut single, “Minimoni Jankenpyon!”, was a #1 hit.

While Mini Moni was initially directed towards younger listeners (in spite of the fact two of the members, Yaguchi and Todd, were in their late teens), they also had an older fan base consisting of older Morning Musume fans (especially of Yaguchi, Kago and Tsuji) and the parents of the younger Mini Moni fans.

The quartet released several singles in 2001 and 2002, and most of these tracks were compiled into their first album MiniMoni Song Dai Hyakka 1 kan. The album’s musical styles spanned wildly from track to track, defiantly incorporating such diverse styles as blues, electronica, march music, jazz, reggae, and horn-driven 60’s soul music.

The group’s almost anarchic presentation would also carry into some of the group’s television appearances, many of which are circulated online, especially amongst the band’s non-Japanese cult audience; these antics have included: Kago playfully saying “big doo-doo” (in English) in response to a Japanese TV interviewer’s question (a bleeped version of the clip has been misidentified as “Kago says fuck you”); band members collectively grabbing the buttocks of a female assistant backstage at a concert (dubbed by some Western fans as the “MiniMoni Ass Grab”, in parody of the song title “MiniMoni Bus Guide”); and an Utaban appearance where Kago slugged Yaguchi in the crotch while Yaguchi was in the middle of a sentence.

Simultaneously with their single releases, the band became the subject of a series of short cartoons of their own, Yarunoda Pyon!, in which they supplied their own voices. They also contributed their voices to the Hamtaro cartoon series, in which hamster versions of MiniMoni are featured. The group recorded two songs especially for Hamtaro under the group pseudonymn MiniHams.

In 2002, Mari Yaguchi graduated from Mini Moni to take on leading the subgroup ZYX, one of the first Hello! Project groups to incorporate the Hello! Project Kids (including a couple of then-future members of Berryz Koubou). Another Morning Musume member, Ai Takahashi took Yaguchi’s place, while Mika Todd, as the oldest member of the current lineup, took over as the band’s leader. That same year, all five members of Mini Moni filmed the movie MiniMoni Ja Movie: Okashina Daibouken (MiniMoni The Movie: The Great Cake Adventure), part of the storyline of which, in the context of the movie’s fantasy setting, “explains” how Yaguchi ended up leaving MiniMoni to begin leading ZYX and how Takahashi ended up in the band.

They started to have a more mature, modern R&B-heavy sound to their music with the single Crazy About You, a style the group explored more heavily on their second album MiniMoni Songs 2. However, their silly side was also well represented on the album with two more songs they contributed to Hamtaro as MiniHams. Former member Yaguchi also appears on three cuts, two of which previously appeared on the Okashina Daibouken soundtrack. They also starred in a mini-series called MiniMoni’s The Brementown Musicians starring Takahashi, Tsuji, and Kago; Mika made brief appearances in two episodes.

The group was put on indefinate hiatus in May of 2004 after the graduation of Mika Todd and the release of one final single, “Lucky CHA CHA CHA!”

In February 2006 MiniMoni’s name was invoked on American television (NBC’s The Tonight Show With Jay Leno) during a skit claiming that one of Leno’s house band members had started out as a member of MiniMoni; a manipulated picture of the Leno band member with MiniMoni (in their outfits from the cover of MiniMoni Songs 2) was aired as part of the sketch.[1]

A story about Mini Moni ミニモニ。

Tsuji Nozomi getting married”, agency officially announced. Press conference to be held on the 10th.

The marriage of actor Sugiura Taiyou(26) and ex-Morning Musume Tsuji Nozomi (19) was announced by both of their agencies on the 8th. They got to know each other in April of last year through a common friend. Since then, they’ve been dating each other as a prerequisite for their marriage. Tsuji had to leave a theater play she acted in due to health problems in the middle of April, but during re-examination in May, it was discovered that she was in her 9th week of pregnancy.

As she needs peace, she has decided to cease her showbusiness activites.

Tsuji retires from the unit “Gyaruru”, which means that the future of the unit is under consideration, while her TV anime voice acting role will use a substitute.

Tsuji’s showbusiness father, producer Tsunku says: “She’s been doing a good job as a singer until now, and now that she’s met the love of her life, she will be able to gain new experiences!”.

The press conference with the official marriage announcement is to be held on the 10th.

Nikkan Sports brings an editorial about Tsuji’s case, including some “facts” not revealed yet.

- UFA is quite shocked by Tsuji’s lack of responsibility towards her duties (theater play, Gyaruru, etc), and it is expected Tsuji will be asked to leave H!P for good.
- UFA suggested Tsunku pull Tsuji out of Gyaruru, and decided on Tsuji’s long-term hiatus. Also, there is no mention of further plans for Tsuji after her maternity leave, so it looks like UFA is not counting on her in the future.
- although Tsunku expressed his joy for Tsuji, UFA definitely doesn’t share it. They organized some urgent meetings to teach staff how to handle media pressure, and many high-ranked managers were contacting related partners and apologizing for Tsuji’s actions. Also, H!P members apparently received some lessons in morals again.
- due to this uproar, Yossie had to take Tsuji’s role in the play, but as her dinner show, which was planned on this month’s 24/25th, was postponed, she can hardly hide her anger. She sees it as an insult toward her own fans.
- a source from UFA says Tsuji was talking about her marriage in advance. After receiving a shock from Kago’s case, she decided to give priority to love and marriage before work.

Tsjui Nozomi Pregnant and getting married. Here is the interview:

Tsuji “I’m sorry for this sudden turn of events, and I’d like to apologize to my fans and staff in my company for any troubles caused. Please watch over me even from now on!”

Taiyou: “I’m sorry for causing trouble to Tsuji’s fans and company staff. After dating for some time, in January we both decided to get married.”

When exactly did your love relationship start?
Sugiura: It was around summer of last year.

And when was marriage considered?
Sugiura: January of this year.

In what month of pregnancy are you?
Tsuji: I’m in my ninth week.

How was the proposal worded?
Sugiura: Ah, this is embarrassing. I love her smile, so it was: “I love to see you smiling, so let me see that smile for the rest of my life. Would you stay with me forever?”

Tsuji-san, how did you react?
Tsuji: Frankly, when I heard that, there was a sudden whiteout inside my head, and I was so happy that I instantly started to cry.

How did you time your proposal?
Sugiura: It was on my birthday, in a car while driving. I gave her the ring then. [Sugiura’s birthday is March 10th.]

What kind of ring is it?
Tsuji: The birthstone for June. [pearl]

Did you think about abortion?
Sugiura: It’s a life born as a result of our love, and we’d like to take good care of this life.

Weren’t you surprised hearing about the pregnancy?
Sugiura: We both didn’t know what to say, so we just laughed. But we were both happy.

Weren’t your parents surprised?
Tsuji: I’ve been talking about my wedding plans with both my family and agency. It’s natural to think about marriage when you’re dating someone. Both of my parents understood this well, and although it was our decision, they were supporting it wholeheartedly.

How did you announce it to the Morning Musume members and your other colleagues?
Tsuji: I sent an email to each one, and they all instantly replied back, saying “Congrats” or “It could be hard from now on, but do your best!”

Were they surprised?
Tsuji: Yes, especially the older members. Like, “I never thought Tsuji would come first.” That was a comment from a certain 34-year-old member.

Where did you meet?
Sugiura: Accidentally, at a friend’s house. In a very ordinary way.

It was reported that you got to know each other through ex-Morning Musume member Yaguchi Mari…
Sugiura: It had nothing to do with Yaguchi-san. It was through a non-celebrity friend.

What about your work from now on?
Tsuji: I’m aware of the troubles caused to many people by my withdrawal from the play and Gyaruru, and I really feel sorry, but I think that the life blooming in my belly is more important than anything else. I’m sorry, but I want to give birth to this baby. If and when things start to calm down, I’m ready to come back and start from scratch again.

Do you two argue?
Sugiura: Yes, but nothing big.

What’s the usual reason?
Tsuji: Me. This relationship is about getting bound to each other, and I’m quite selfish about many things, etc.

Who comes out with the apology first?
Tsuji: No one apologizes. We just go to sleep, and when we wake up, we say “Morning!” to each other.

If it’s a girl, would you let her join Morning Musume?
Tsuji: Well, I’ve been in the group and in showbusiness since I finished elementary school at the age of 12, so I think she has to finish junior/senior high at least, and then it would be okay.
If it’s a boy, would you like him to become an Ultraman?

Sugiura: Of course. My dream since elementary school was to become an Ultraman once. I would be glad to show him Ultraman as well.

UPDATED: Tsuji had a little girl.

Why I admire Mini Moni ミニモニ。

Like American Idol, these four girls had to first win a contest to make it aboard Morning Musume, Japan’s Daughters..in pop music. Then, breaking off from there with a special talent of their own, they broke the boundaries of talent. Doing their own show in Japan, and making a number of hit records before eventually breaking up. Mika Todd was one of the amazing talents who came from America to get her chance to show off her talents. She was chosen as the last member to join Mini Moni. She unfortunatly was the first to leave, going back to Hawaii to preform solo, and the group broke up into further units..two forming the Jpop group “W” DoubleYou, while the other joined another girl pop band. While together they were a force that Japan could not ignore. Though very young, they were the bright stars of Japan’s future. Amazing group and their songs will be around for a long time.
