The real reason I want to meet Miranda July
I would like to go thrifting with her, I think.
Artist, performer, and film-maker. Recently directed her first feature-length film, “Me and You and Everyone We Know”.
is because I want to co-star in her next movie.
Plus I’d like to tell her to create more dvd extras for her next film. People want to hear a commentary and I think she would do a great job. I liked the interview feature on the mac site (that should have been on the dvd).
In his own way, this white-haired man standing a bit awkwardly at the podium and holding a stark wrinkled typed paragraph impersonates and then introduces her. Miranda walks out and the audience claps, and we clap too, then laugh because she can’t hear us. We, a crowd of a hundred fifty or so, are sitting in the “overflow” room, which is one wall separated from the newly minted Billy Wilder theater, which seats 295, which is where she’s standing, which is sold out.
Displays of affection abound. There’s a vibe of excitement stemming from the line that curves up from the stairs of the first floor to the second, leading to a small terribly lit corner at the Hammer bookstore (which sadly failed to stock up on enough books, “No One Belongs Here More Than You” was sold out before the signing started). There is July. She has an affable smile and seems a bit shy compared to the energy of the people in front of her. People take photographs, 600’s, 680’s, 690’s and big shot polaroids all make their debut. Two things I will likely remember: the moment her friends showed up in a flash mob to give her a group hug. And her hands. She has pianist hands that would be great to sketch in a life-drawing class (to see what I’m talking about, take a look at this Blonde Redhead video).
I saw her speak at the screening of ME AND YOU in SF and I wanted to catch some of her performances but they sold out instantly. Now, fortunately, she has a show coming to NYC that is not (yet) sold out so it looks like I’ll get my wish. It’s from 3/1-3/4/07 at The Kitchen. Check out thekitchen.org for those of you still want to see her!
I don’t recall the first time I spoke to Miranda, but I saw her numerous times in Los Angeles during 1998 and 1999. I went to all her appearances from an opening slot with The Need to her guest appearance with ICU and Dub Narcotic Sound System. She even appeared on my radio show once doing a performance with Zach Love. The last time I saw her was at CMJ in New York when we took a cab to meet up with Calvin Johnson across town.
ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW is amazing!!! It’s within arms reach as I type this. I applaud whoever made this placeholder. I love you. A lot.
