Why I admire Maya Angelou
She is one of the most amazing and inspirational women I’ve ever witnessed. Her thoughts blow me away, and she is easily one of the women I admire most.
Most known for writing “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.”

I was 14, just coming to terms with the fact that I was Gay. I was living in a very small town in NH. I felt all alone, with no one to talk to about it. I read Her book “I know why the caged bird sings” Her life story gave me hope. I have been a huge fan ever since. I have read just about everything she has written. When ever I am asked who I admire the most, I never think twice, its always Maya Angelou
I was selected in 2005 as 1 of 7 young women to win a scholarships from the Texas Women Conference, Big deal, like $5,000, and a plane trip to anywhere in the USA. I received a plaque from the governor on a stage in front of probably 4,000 headstrong women. I met Sarah Ferguson, and other important women. but the cherry on it all, was that maya angelou herself came to this convention, to inspire all of the women who were lucky enough to breath the same air as her. As I set just in awe and captivated with every word that came out of her mouth, I was in a euphoric state of bliss. I never wanted it to end, b/c she truly is remarkable, in the way she entraps you. She was phonomenal, nad I am truly an admirer.
She holds a deep well of wisdom, and I need a wise woman in my life.
Because hers was the first book i bought wich made me cry and laugh and smile “i know why caged birds sing” was the most beautiful i have found it difficult to find in shops as mine was destroyed in a small bedroom fire i had a few years back x
i love that she inspired me to realise that to do better, one must first of all know better.
i know better now, i do better.
At a book signing, she slurred her words, she said “I was the soul of Howard University.”
I have a friend that is Dr. Angelou’s biggest fan. Her work has inspired him throughout his life. One of his biggest dreams is to meet this marvelous woman. I recently purchased tickets for her show on May 21, 2007 at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in Nashville, Tennessee. The show itself will be a remarkable fantasy for him. He has always wanted to meet her, and I would do anything that make this a reality for him. I hope that with some luck and good fortune that he will be able to.
Has anyone seen the Iconaclast show with Maya Angelou and Dave Chappelle? Amazing! I highly recommend. Ms.Angelou would just be an amazing woman to have said it is a pleasure to meet.
I had read Maya Angelou’s work, and jumped at the chance to drive down to Northfield to hear her render a lecture to students and interested community members one year – my friends and I sat in an overflow room and watched a live video of her talk – splendid, deep and inspiring – and by chance got to thank her briefly in person, afterwards.
Oh. My. What a light in the world she is. Thank you, Ms Angelou. Thank you.
