Master of the funk and everything that is funky. Leader of many, many grooving bands: First, the doo-wop group The Parliaments; then the wildly influential Funkadelic; Parliament (and the source of many samples) followed; and after a string of solo records, he tours all the time with the P-Funk All-Stars.
Almost every current R&B and rap/hip-hop group has sampled some song that he either wrote or produced. I love this quote of his (from a Rolling Stone interview many years ago) regarding samples: “Samples are like Lay’s Potato Chips. You can’t take just one. And I’m the one holding the bag.”
