How I met Tom Brosseau

I moved to San Diego in 2001. Shortly before or after 9/11 I remember walking into Java Joe’s for the very first time ever for Wendy’s Open Mic Night. Honest to God, when I walked in Tom Brosseau was on stage singing a song about a girl who lived in the apple groove. I believe it’s on his first album. I was amazed. Here was this guy, blowing my mind right off the bat in San Diego. I was sold…he was amazing. I remember telling him after how great he was and asking him if he’d like to play sometime. He said yeah and gave me his number and I think I called it like 2 hours later and I think I scared him off for a while (note to self: don’t call people 2 hours after they give you their number). Anyway, we ended up pals and played throughout the scene in SD for a number of years. He moved to LA and has been kicking butt like I knew he would right from the very beginning.

Why I want to meet Tom Brosseau

He writes such sweet songs with such lyrical depth… and I’ve only listened to his first album so far. Some of the best folk I’ve heard since Damien Jurado’s Rehearsals for Departure.

How I met Tom Brosseau

Last night I saw him at the Chop Suey and for his last song he asked if anyone would like to hear anything and I suggested, in a very calm and collected manner, “Jane and Lou,” which is my favorite song by him. Okay, actually I sort of yelled it while jumping up and down. He played it very beautifully and then after the show he was at the merch table so I went up to thank him for playing it and before I could say anything he said, thanks for requesting that song! and then I got all gushy and told him my name twice and asked if I could hug him and said I thought his music was “just beautiful” about 800 times. I couldn’t stop smiling the rest of the night. I LOVE HIM! And he has soft hands.

The real reason I want to meet Tom Brosseau

I had been enjoying Mr. Brosseau’s music for some time but I saw him live this weekend and he is so charming that now I am totally in love. I can just see us getting married and becoming a travelling troubadour couple in Appalachia—I’ll play the banjo and be the costume mistress, and he’ll write the old timey songs and book our shows. And in between performances we’ll live in a little house he built and do radio programs, and oh crap we might need to go back in time too because I think this is the Carter Family biography.

Dear Tom, if you are reading this. I was in the front in a polka dot shirt at the crocodile next to Brendon who bought you a beer and I’m sure we made eye contact and had a moment. Email me.
