I met him at the Printers Row Book Fair in Chicago a couple summers ago. There’s a branch of 826 Valencia in Chitown and he had a handful of kids read some of their own work. It was pretty wonderful, him and the kids signed books afterward and that’s when I seized the opportunity to talk to him. He’s a real nice guy, if you ever get the chance to say hello go for it.
A Heartbreaking Work… was my university’s freshman book the year I started. I was in a program that grouped certain freshman required courses together, one of which was a Freshman writing class. He came and spoke to the entire school in our auditorium, but our program was able to snag him for a much smaller, more intimate reading/q&a session. I asked him a question, [can’t remember it now, sadly], and he said “Wow. That’s a good question,” in response to it. Ha! I definitely had him sign my copy, and chatted with him for a bit afterwards. Really swell, down-to-earth dude.
Not so much meet as “punch in the face.” Not very hard, though. I like his writing but he seems so pretentious! I would like to punch him in the nose, just hard enough that he drops his white wine spritzer.
McSweeneys is one of the most original concepts and always gets me laughing, wondering, confused!
Love Dave Egger’s books as well, and have met him twice at signings. He seems like a cool person.
I saw him long ago and only once. He was with his friends in the restaurant of Hilton Sydney...

I went to the opening of 826 Seattle’s Space Travel Store (which is awesome) today, and he was there. Bethany found Dave for me but would not endorse my desire to hug him. So I was on my own. Nevertheless, I gave him a big hug and told him that I love him. He said, “Okay.”
