Laziness. I guess I figure if I meet him I can find out what’s in his manifesto without having to read the whole thing… have you seen how many pages that thing is?
I think he’s smart, funny, interesting, blah blah blah.
But the real reason I want to meet Ira Glass? He’s ideal eye candy.
A few months ago I saw him speak with Lawrence Weschler, to promote Weschler’s new book. As I was walking out, Ira was walking in the aisle next to me and my friend. After much debating, I decided to go meet him.
As I walked up, there were two other people trying to pitch ideas to him. He was very polite, but declined their requests, saying “I would love to [insert random thing here], but I really don’t know anything about it. Maybe if it had anything to do with radio I could help you out.” I felt really awkward because I had nothing to say to him. He turned to me with a look that said – now what? I stuttered out my name and said “I really have nothing to say to you, but I love your show, and your work, and you are the one who got me listening to public broadcasting, and I just wanted to meet you.” He paused, and seemed to look like – ok, and? – but I think when he figured out I wasn’t trying to sell him an idea, he relaxed. He asked me how I liked the show, and other random things, and we talked for about five minutes. He was incredibly nice, and left me with the impression that he’s a really great guy.
My friend went out to dinner with Ira after he spoke at CMU, and Ira told him he was “a riot”. Could this be my in!?
He’s got one of the most intelligent and entertaining shows on radio. Go Ira! Woo!
Ira Glass searches out the most interesting people for his shows. There is nothing better then This American Life on NPR.
I find his raido show so enjoyable and thought provoking. It has moved me to tears on occasion and laugher more often than not.
