How I met Willie Mays
I was working as a loan officer for Pan American Mortgage in San Jose, California in 1980. Willie Mays came in to talk about a home loan. It was just after he had been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. I just kept saying to him you don’t want to get a loan here the interest rates are too high (we were a hard money lender). We talked for about 25 minutes. Really down to earth nice guy. After he left I kept thinking about how huge his arms were and how small his waist was and that he was in tremendous shape for his age. The mistake I made was telling my bosses he was in the office AFTER he left. They were pretty mad at me
I should have told him “Just a minute I’ll get the President of the company to help you.” I wasn’t really sure it was him until he drove away in the new car he had just been given.
