I met her in Granger, Texas, where she was invited to be the MC for the corn parade or the corn festival or some completely small-town-Texas-amazing-cultural experience like that. She and her daughter Skyler rode in the parade and then went to the festivities. She was surrounded by people, including some pushy PR types who were telling her what they had lined up for her and who she needed to shake hands with and have photos taken with, etc. She stopped and turned on these people and told them, straight-up, “My daughter is hungry. She wants to eat and she wants to ride the merry-go-round. So I am going to feed my daughter and take her to ride the merry-go-round and then I will do what you want to do.”
Well, I immediately thought, “Whoa! I don’t want to get between her and her fried chicken or she might take my head off.” So I was kind of hanging back like a wimp and she saw me out of the corner of her eye. She turned to me and smiled and I introduced myself and told her I wanted to meet her because I was an actress, also, and admired her work. She spent five minutes with me, encouraging me and talking to me. She was patient and gracious and very, very warm.
Then she took Skyler to eat fried chicken and ride the merry-go-round.
