Why I want to meet Donald Fagen

There’s no way I can summarize my thoughts on this subject in a li’l comment here, but- because he’s the number one guy on my list of “people to meet” I just felt like I had to say something! To completely over-simplify it, I could just leave it at this: He is my hero.

BUT I’m not the kind of person who has “heroes,” who explodes people in her mind to be larger-than-life. I want to meet him because he’s been a teacher to me for so long through his music and seems like such a normie who might like the idea of a younger musician seeking his advice or tutelage- in the tradition of great jazz players (and composers of all kinds, actually!) through the ages, he too might take someone under his wing for maybe a brief moment in time? I don’t even know for sure that that would be “teaching” or that it would be about “music”... maybe more about friendship or ack I don’t know. Whatever it means, I think meeting and getting to know him would rule. I think I might have something to do with a Steely Dan, Walter/Donald-related legacy to be left in this world. But I don’t understand what my gut is saying exactly. It’s all very bizarre.

Now that I officially sound crazy, I will leave it at that.

A story about Donald Fagen

This only indirectly relates to Mr. Fagen. However, it goes to the entire band of the early ‘70s and their remarkable creative process.

After a show in the early 70s I attended a party with several in the band, Jim F.? (the drummer), Royce (vocals) and, of course, J. “Skunk” Baxter (guitarist) and spent time with them sharing my experiences in the SF Bay Area from the late 60s to ‘71 and curiously enough … the next album (‘Pretzel Logic’) seemingly revealed several songs with lyrics at least partially alluding to those conversations (‘Major Dude,’ ‘Rikki,’ and ‘Pretzel Logic’).

What a trip!!!

How I met Donald Fagen

Walter Becker and Donald Fagen were awarded their honorary doctorates during the first of my two graduations from Berklee College of Music in Boston. They are a couple of cool cats – and nice, smart guys.
